Carleton University: MacOdrum Library HIGHLIGHTS
Ottawa, ON K1S 5B6
September 16 to December 7, 2024
On Wednesday, November 13, CBBAG OV hosted a special event at the Book Arts Lab at Carleton University’s MacOdrum Library. Over 30 people gathered to learn about the Kindred Spirits exhibit and Lucy Maud Montgomery. Christine McNair, CBBAG President, provided opening remarks. Dr. Sara Jamieson, Associate Professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at Carleton University, spoke about Montgomery. Dr. Jamieson reflected on Maud’s triumphs as well as her struggles, and she observed how the Kindred Spirits exhibit made her “think about books as crafted things, and about how the look, the feel, and the smell of those covers and pages shape our engagement with the words on the pages between their covers.”

Emily Loker, a senior bookbinder at the Canadian Library of Parliament, spoke about her contributions to the Kindred Spirits exhibit: two beautiful volumes, fully bound in leather with exquisite embossing, tooling, and even a fore-edge painting. Her works reflect her passion for bookbinding and her adoration for L.M. Montgomery’s works.
Those who attended the event received a tour of the Carleton University Book Arts Lab, were invited to make and take their very own Lucy Maud Montgomery 150th anniversary souvenir pamphlet, and enjoyed a slice of birthday cake.
Kindred Spirits is an initiative by the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild (CBBAG).
